ZZ TOP is the longest surviving band in the history of rock-and-roll. They have been able to maintain their original members’ since 1970. No other band, in the world has been able to escape drug addiction, plane crashes, murders’, girlfriends’, ect… Billy Gibbons was raised in Memorial, (Houston) the son of a veteranarian. Dusty Hill, a fabulous base player, and Frank Beard, an accomplished drummer with the timing of a metronome.
ZZTOP’s Billy Gibbons had/has again, his late 1950′s Gibson Les Paul Standard, sunburst that he named “Pearly Gates”. It became the band’s signature sound. However, the most popular song that ZZ TOP recorded, La Grange, Billy Gibbons’ played a Strat. In fact, to this day, you can still order a La Grange Strat from Fender.
Although, I think these days, Billy Gibbons mostly plays a Vox. He’s also played an S1, an SG, a chaquita (BSK 3593), “Pearly” of course, an RD Artist, various Fenders’, but mostly Gibsons’ I’m glad to say. I’d love to have the opportunity to play “Pearly Gates”. The action may be a little high and the strings’ may be a little heavy, but Billy, like I, have read the manual. Pearly’s a real mans’ guitar!
